Last Week’s High Temperatures Causing Concern for Farmers

April 17, 2023 – Max Koskela from Two K Farms was featured on Up North Live’s on-air segment about the impact of recent spring temperature swings.

Last week’s record-high temperatures could spell trouble for fruit farmers in northern Michigan. On the Leelanau Peninsula, Two K Farms has several rows of apple trees and grapes.

High temperatures in the 70s and 80s last week has tree farmers leery about the fruit of their labor this year.

“We went from zero to 60 very quickly. It feels like summer,” Two K Farms Owner Max Koskela said. β€œThe trees are emerging. We’re in the green tip right now. And that can create a lot of issues.”

Issues like a frost in the near future can really impact the delicate stage apple trees are in now.

These green tips are the first stage before trees start to bud and a frost means trouble.
